Looking for suggestions - hunting deer with a bow.
I have been using my recurve bow for turkeys using Turkey Tearror broadheads. I bagged two nice turkeys this spring, and hope to get the third for my limit this weekend.
I am looking to hunt deer this fall - to fill the freezer. Is my recurve good enough with a different point? I am looking for a good drop for the game with little chasing on a good target strike. Any suggestions? |
Re: Looking for suggestions - hunting deer with a bow.
I just completed my Bowhunters certificiation here in Maine. I have been told by several instructors that it is ACCURACY and ARROWHEADS that do all the work.
You must purchase BROADHEADS for your arrows. I would imagine that a recurve bow would do the job, but it does have its limitations. A compound bow can now make an arrow travel at over 300 ft per second, a deer's reflexes are calculated at over 600 ft per second. I would imagine that a recurve bows speed is much slower. It can be done and has been done. I have seen photos of men taking large grizzly's with recurve bows. Bears are harder to kill, deer are harder to hit. Good luck, but I would recommend a used compound bow that has been fitted to you and new broadhead arrows. |

Check out Mathews SQ2 bows on Ebay.

Deer are fast. Usually any shot over 25 yards you can count on "string jump" happening[the deer moving from the sound of the release before the arrow gets there]. Both compound bows and carbon arrows can up your speed and reduce this effect. Also make sure your broadheads are sharp and strong enough to stay straight if bone is hit.
